Pastor Rick was reared in a military family, born in Alaska and traveled the world, graduating high school from Hong Kong International School. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, where as a freshman, he became a Christian through the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. 

He entered Talbot Theological Seminary. During this time, he met and married his wife of 40 years, Gretchen, in 1976. He graduated with an M.Div degree (Practical Theology) and was ordained as a pastor in the Evangelical Free Church in 1978, serving as a US Air Force chaplain. This ministry took him around the U.S. and the Philippine Islands and England. He served at all levels of the USAF Chaplaincy including Senior Pastor of multi-staff chapels for 5 bases, Senior AF Chaplain at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington DC and Executive Director of the Armed Forces Chaplains Board in the Pentagon. He retired after 30 years of active duty in 2008 following his final assignment as the 10th Air Base Wing Chaplain at the USAF Academy. Rick and Gretchen currently live in Colorado Springs.

Rick and Gretchen have three married children and six grand children. They enjoy RV camping, traveling, and exercising at the YMCA.
